Trusted Local Accountants, Supporting You Every Step of the Way
From rising costs to new digital tax requirements, individuals and small businesses in Retford are navigating an increasingly complex financial world. Our team are there to help businesses cut through that complexity with clear, practical advice and a genuinely local approach.
Associate Director Laura Holyoak discusses the challenges faced by local clients, the benefits of working with a professional accountancy team, and how proactive support can make a lasting difference.
- What are the most common financial challenges you see right now?
We’re seeing two main pressures. The first is rising costs from energy bills to supplier pricing, which are squeezing margins for businesses and reducing disposable income for individuals. The second is Making Tax Digital (MTD). While it’s a positive step, it can feel overwhelming, particularly for clients less comfortable with digital tools. A key part of our role is simplifying that transition and providing reassurance every step of the way.
- How can proactive tax planning make a difference?
Proactive tax planning removes surprises and puts clients in control. Rather than reacting at year-end, we work with clients throughout the year to identify opportunities, manage liabilities and plan ahead. This improves cashflow, supports better decision-making and builds confidence, whether for a growing business or an individual planning for the future.
- What benefits can someone expect from working with a chartered accountant?
Many clients initially come to us for compliance, such as tax returns or accounts, but quickly see the wider value. A chartered accountant acts as a trusted adviser providing clarity, saving time and helping avoid costly mistakes. It’s about having someone who understands your situation and can guide you through both challenges and opportunities.”
- What sets your Retford office apart?
We’re a small, friendly team, from the local area, but with the support of the wider Saul Fairholm team, so we understand the community and business landscape. Our office is easy to access, with free parking, which clients really value.
What sets us apart is our approach. While many see accountancy as a year-end task, we focus on ongoing financial clarity. Through regular check-ins, forward planning and proactive advice, we help clients stay in control, avoid surprises and make better-informed decisions throughout the year.
Communication is central to this. We’re faster, clearer and more approachable than the traditional stereotype, explaining things in plain English and responding promptly, so clients always know where they stand.
Our values of trust, integrity and transparency are at the heart of everything we do, and they have helped us build long-standing relationships. As one client said: “We are impressed with Laura and the staff at Saul Fairholm. Their service is efficient but also friendly and approachable. We would highly recommend them.”
We’re also investing in the future through our apprentice programme, supporting the next generation while continuing to serve our local community.
- Where should someone start if they need support?
Start with a conversation. You don’t need everything organised – that’s what we’re here for. We take time to understand your situation and guide you, whether that’s tax, bookkeeping or longer-term planning.
